The Village NZ

Play It Strange is a charitable trust that ignites and nurtures songwriting talent among New Zealand secondary school students, providing pathways for creative expression through song.

Established in 2003, they run national songwriting competitions for 13 to 18-year-olds. Each year, approximately 50 finalist acts are awarded a valuable day in a recording studio to professionally record their original songs. Beyond this, they offer crucial industry connections, mentorship, and exciting performance opportunities.

Over two decades, Play It Strange has inspired the creation of 5,100 songs entered into their competitions. The trust has also provided 750 recording sessions for songs by 900 young songwriters, giving each a significant studio recording experience.

The Wright Family Foundation is proud to partner with Play It Strange in funding their nationwide “Peace Song” competition, supporting their ongoing mission to provide youth across New Zealand with a platform to express themselves through the power of songwriting.
